About the Event
The Norwegian Embassy in Tokyo is pleased to host a Copeland Evening, celebrating the life and legacy of Johan Thoresen—better known as William Copeland—a pioneering figure in Japan’s brewing history.
In 2025, Glenn Scoggins and Jan Einar Strømsodd delivered a highly engaging and educational presentation on Copeland’s achievements at the Yokohama Country & Athletic Club (YC&AC) in Yamate. The event was very well received, and following the strong support of the Norwegian Ambassador, we are delighted to bring a similar evening to the Embassy in 2026, timed to coincide with the anniversary of Copeland’s passing.
Glenn Scoggins studied history and East Asian studies at Yale University and Harvard University and is a highly respected local historian. He has taught history at Saint Maur International School since 1977 and is widely regarded as an authority on Japanese and Yokohama history.
Jan Einar Strømsodd is a Norwegian long-term resident of Japan and Yokohama, a former tax consultant, and the founder of Your Next Shoes, an internationally recognized footwear and fashion publication.
This evening brings together business, history, and culture, and we warmly welcome invited guests from the Norwegian–Japanese community, including colleagues from Kirin, to reflect on Copeland’s enduring legacy and the shared heritage between Norway and Japan

ノルウェー大使館（東京）は、日本のビール史における先駆者 ヨハン・トーレセン（ウィリアム・コープランド） の生涯と功績を称える「コープランド・イブニング」を開催いたします。
